Three dangerous seaquakes south of Iceland

The three seaquakes listed below are the most dangerous to whales that we have observed all year. Surely these events will cause a pod stranding somewhere.

The question is where will the injured whales strand? Right now the surface currents are headed straight for the Fareo Islands in the North Atlantic. The Fareo people have a tradition of driving whales to their beaches and slaughtering the animals.

However, if the winds shifts a little south, the injured pod could strand in the Scotland, the Orkney Islands or in the Shetland Islands. Or they could swim through the channel between Orkney and Shetland Islands and enter the North Sea.

The whales should near the Fareos on or about 6 October. If they are not harvested in the drive fisheries, they should arrive at the entrance to the North Sea on 9 October.

Time will tell....

CORRELATING WHALE MASS BEACHINGS WITH THE RESPONSIBLE EARTHQUAKES

The theory developed by commercial sea captain, David Williams, indicates that sudden changes in the surrounding water pressure above the epicenter of tectonic/volcanic earthquakes along mid-oceanic ridges can and do cause barotraumatic injury in the head sinuses of any nearby whales/dolphins.

Barotraumatized sinuses are not fatal. Rather, such a diving-related injury disrupts the function of their biosonar and prevents them from diving and feeding. The injury is thought to be relatively common with many pods recovering after a week or so of rest on the surface.

The most-serious problem earthquake-injured whales face at first is the half-starved oceanic sharks gathering around them waiting on the most seriously-injured to fall behind. The whales know the sharks are waiting in the shadows and huddle close to each other for protections. Herding into a tight social group in times of danger is a strategy practiced by many different species in the sea and on land. (deafwhale.com)

The second most-serious problem is that the sinus barotrauma has disabled their ability to dive and feed themselves. Fresh water becomes a major concern since 90% of the water they use for hydration comes from the food they eat.

Another serious problem is that the barotrauma knocks out their biosonar and destroys their ability to use loud low frequency clicks to navigate their way around the oceans. Said differently, the whales are LOST AT SEA immediately following the barotraumatic-injury.

The travel path of lost whales is the same as the travel path of anything lost at sea. A dead log, sea weeds, floating trash, a blind swimmer, a raft with no sail, and everything else lost at sea goes downstream in the path of least resistance.

Thus, wherever a pod of whales ends up after a barotraumatic injury will always be under the complete control of the surface currents. These animals have no idea which way to swim or what danger might await them just over the next big wave.

If the surface currents, which are responsible for building beaches in the first place, just happens to direct the whales to beach under construction, the entire pod will be guided into a sand trap. If on the other hand the surface currents carry them into the back waters of an island chain, like the Florida Keys, they are just as likely to be washed into a mangrove swamp, onto a sand bar miles from dry land, or into any number of natural traps for lost whales.

Pods or individuals, suffering from barotrauma induced by sudden and excessive pressure fluctuations are not familiar with a sandy shoreline and will try to remain in deep water as long as they can; often the whales will spy hop looking for a land mass and a way out of a trap. In fact, a lost pod would likely be able to remain offshore for several weeks before they become too debilitated to avoid shallow water.

Capt. Williams has done about 100 tracings. The average distance travel between the epicenter of the quake and the beach is about 2,500 miles; the average time between injury and stranding is 25 days.

Therefore, to determine which earthquake was responsible, one must trace the surface currents about 2,500 miles upstream from the beach and look around for a suspicious earthquake along a mid-ocean ridge that occur about 25 days before the stranding.

It's that simply....

VARIABLES THAT DETERMINE THE ACCURANCY OF EACH PREDICTION

(a) The danger zone above the epicenter might not contain any whales.

(b) The whales might sense the pending quake and scamper away from the danger zone before being injured. This is especially true for larger earthquakes that emit precursor signals hours in advance.

(c) The vertical component of the earthquake might be too weak to generate rapid and excessive pressure changes needed to cause barotraumatic injury in diving whales.

(d) Seaquake-injured whales might recover within a few days if their injuries are minor.

(e) Seaquake-injured whales might be taken by sharks or killer whales before reaching the beach, especially if their injuries are severe. These premier ocean predators feed on whales, not minnows. A potent seaquake would serve as a dinner bell for big sharks and killer whales.

(f) Oceanic surface currents might carry the pod away from shore and into the open ocean where they eventually succumb to predation.

(g) The injured pod might strand on a remote beach and not be discovered.

(h) A storm at sea might split the pod into several smaller groups which can then strand at different beaches and different times. Smaller groups also make easier pray for sharks and killer whales.

(i) Native folks might harvest the stranded whales and not report them to the authorities. Eating live-stranded seaquake-injured whales was common a hundred years ago, and appears to be environmentally sound.
